Woman With a Mirror

Kitagawa Utamaro

late 18th century;

woodblock print

        This is one of the most famous pieces by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806), one of the most popular woodblock print artists of his time. He was famous for his serene pictures of women, depicted in ordinary activities, such as in this picture, checking her hair. Claude Monet and the other French Impressionists were highly impressed, by such pictures, and it showed in their own paintings. Monet actually has this print hanging in his dining room. (Incidentally, so do I...)

-What does French Impressionism have to do with anything here?
