This painting this is inspired by a Japanese woodblock print made by Utamaro Kitagawa circa 1790. At first I had planned to make an almost exact replica. However, when the first sketch was almost complete, I realized that the girl Utamaro's picture was busy fixing her hair. Nausicaa is not the type of person to be occupied in worrying how her hair looks, so it wouldn't seem right to portray her in an act of vanity like that. So to reflect her personality more accurately. I completely recomposed the picture, making her look outward rather than at herself.
